Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes
The Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes were established in 1908 and is currently recognised as New Zealand's premier prize for juvenile racehorses. The Group 1 event is scheduled for late March or early April each year and is run over 1400 metres at Awapuni Racecourse which is sited southwest of central Palmerston North. The course at Awapuni is prepared turf with an overall circumference of approximately 1800m. The race commences on the back straight of the course proper with an extended run to the home bend. Horses travel the left handed track in an anticlockwise direction and extreme outside barriers can be a competitive disadvantage. Entry is determined through official ballot and lead up events include the Wakefield Challenge Stakes ran over 1200 metres at Trentham racecourse, Wellington and the Ellerslie Sires Produce Stakes over 1200 metres at Ellerslie racecourse, Auckland.
